Asthma & Buteyko Breathing

Breathe Easy Again — Naturally

What is Asthma?

Asthma is defined as a constriction of the airways in your lungs due to inflammation. Narrow airways make it harder to breathe, and there is a feeling of suffocation, difficulty inhaling or exhaling.

It can cause:

  • Wheezing or whistling sounds when breathing
  • Shortness of breath or chest tightness
  • Persistent coughing (especially at night or early morning)

Asthma symptoms may come and go, but for many people they can interfere with sleep, physical activity, and daily life.

The Breathing Connection

The onset of asthma symptoms causes the airways to constrict, leading to a feeling of suffocation. In an attempt to ease this discomfort, the body begins to over-breathe, resulting in an increase in breathing rate and volume. However, greater breathing volume causes greater constriction, maintaining a vicious cycle that can only be relieved with medication. The functional breathing program helps to stop this cycle naturally, reducing the need for reliever medications or steroids.

Asthma companions:

  • Mouth breathing instead of nasal breathing
  • Breathing too much air too quickly (“over-breathing”)
  • Frequent sighing or yawning to “catch your breath”

These patterns can:

  • Lower the carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels in your blood
  • Make your airways tighten and become more sensitive
  • Dry and cool the airways, which can trigger symptoms

The result? The vicious cycle of over-breathing and asthmatic symptoms.

How Buteyko Breathing Helps

The Buteyko Method is a scientifically supported approach to retraining the way you breathe.

It focuses on:

  • Nasal breathing — warming, filtering, and humidifying the air you breathe
  • Reduced volume breathing — restoring the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your body
  • Gentle, slower breaths — calming your respiratory system and your nervous system

This helps to:

  • Reduce airway sensitivity
  • Lower the frequency and severity of asthma attacks and become asthma-free
  • Support better exercise tolerance
  • Improve overall energy and calmness

My Approach

Every person with asthma is different — triggers, severity, lifestyle, and age all matter. That’s why my programs are personalised, combining the Buteyko method with practical steps you can integrate into your everyday life.

We work together so you can:

  • Breathe more efficiently at rest and during activity
  • Respond to early symptoms without panic
  • Reduce reliance on reliever inhalers and eventually wean off them completely (read about asthma medication here)

What You Can Expect

Most clients notice changes within weeks, including:

  • Fewer asthma symptoms
  • Better quality sleep
  • Increased energy
  • Greater confidence in physical activity

Evidence for Buteyko Breathing in Asthma

Buteyko breathing is backed by several studies:

  • A 2008 Respirology study found participants reduced their use of reliever medication by 90% after learning Buteyko.
  • Cochrane Reviews have reported improvements in quality of life and symptom control in asthma patients using breathing retraining.

Is This Right for You?

Buteyko breathing can be helpful for both adults and children with asthma — whether your symptoms are mild or more persistent.

It works alongside your existing asthma management plan and does not replace medical care.
